What is glucosamine?
Glucosamine occurs naturally in the body and is found within cartilage, which acts as a cushion around joints. It also helps to develop other tissues, such as tendons, which are vital for joint health. Dogs produce less glucosamine as they age and so become less effective at rebuilding cartilage. This is why joint problems primarily occur in older dogs – or highly active dogs whose joints are put under stress on a daily basis.
Benefits of glucosamine for dogs
Through its contribution to building cartilage, glucosamine delivers the following benefits:
- Reduces inflammation around joints
- Improves joint mobility and flexibility
- Strengthens joint structure
- Targets and alleviates joint pain and discomfort
- Prevents further damage to joints
Does my dog need glucosamine?
Research suggests that giving glucosamine to your dog can help reduce inflammation around joints and protect them from damage. So, if your dog is suffering from joint problems such as a lack of mobility or joint pain in general, then glucosamine is a compelling option.
Glucosamine can also be used proactively to protect against future joint related problems. The proactive use of glucosamine is particularly relevant if your dog is of a breed that is likely to develop joint issues in later life, such as: labradors, spaniels, varieties of mountain dog, rottweilers, retrievers and German shepherds.
